September 12th

"On September 11, 2001, many bad things happened. September 12th was a new day. We knew everything would be all right."

from September 12th: We knew Everything Would Be All Right
Written and illustrated by first-grade students of
H. Byron Masterson Elementary in Kennet, Missouri

I was teaching kindergarten on September 11, 2001. I had to talk to 5 year-olds about the terrible things that happened that morning. Now, I teach 2nd grade and my students have no recollection of September 11, 2001. Some of them even have fathers in the military who are deployed to places on the other side of the world as a result of the events of that day. And mothers who stay behind and take care of their families by themselves. It is amazing the impact of that day. For the people that lived through that day, everything changed. And even for those who can't remember, their lives are still impacted. For those who lost ones they loved and for those who still sacrifice....nine years later, we won't forget, but we know we will be OK.
